HEARTS & HOMES FOR REFUGEES VIRTUAL CONCERT FOR REFUGEES WITH MUSICAL GUEST DIANA JONES
*With a special appearance by singer-songwriter Richard Thompson and Zara Phillips*
Hearts & Homes for Refugees will present a Virtual Concert for Refugees in New York on Sunday, May 17 at 6:00 PM. The Virtual Concert, produced by River Spirit Music, a concert and event production company based in Hastings-on-Hudson, features the award-winning nationally-touring singer-songwriter, DIANA JONES. Her newest album, scheduled to release in September, is called Song To A Refugee - a song cycle based on the stories of refugees. The concert will be presented online in HD and full stereo high fidelity sound, with the option for viewing in 360° virtual reality. Special thanks to Nader Sadre for his invaluable production assistance.
Hearts & Homes for Refugees partners with many groups, including Catholic Charities, HIAS and others to welcome and provide community support to our refugee neighbors in Westchester County and beyond. Volunteers help refugees find housing and employment, assist them in navigating the health and education systems, and help them to learn English and to integrate. Hearts & Homes leads the Westchester Refugee Initiative, a coalition of like-minded nonprofits, faith and civic groups, and people of goodwill. Working in the community at large enables Hearts & Homes to educate, inspire, and equip others to welcome and advocate for the stranger.
We welcome Diana’s special guests, GRAMMY® Award-nominated legend Richard Thompson and Zara Phillips. Sir Richard is an English singer, songwriter, and guitarist and was the founder of the ‘60s folk-rock group Fairport Convention. He’s been named one of Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and counts Lifetime Achievement Awards from both the Americana Music Association and from the BBC Awards. Time Magazine included his “1952 Vincent Black Lightning,” on its “100 Greatest Songs Since 1923” list.
As a benefit concert, guests are invited to make an additional donation to support the work of Hearts & Homes for Refugees. Donations will support their COVID-19 Relief Fund, which is providing direct assistance to refugees impacted by COVID-19. Many are already living on the margins, some are ineligible for government assistance, and all were already trauma survivors, having been forced to flee their homes for safety in the U.S.
Contributions are also welcome from those unable to attend the concert. Donations are 100% deductible as is provided by law.
In an attempt to make sense of what was happening on our southern border, at the Mediterranean Sea and elsewhere, Jones began to write the stories she was hearing about, one voice at a time. The flood of songs that came out of those stories has become - Song To A Refugee.
The New York Times says that Diana’s clarion alto evokes the "rich timbres…of a cello or viola." Steve Earle says that "Diana Jones is one of the best songwriters I've come across in the last ten years.”
